Help for Individual Permissions in the Connection Editor

TO DO: An introduction (with screen images) that explains what this is all about.

Permissions that you CANNOT change here

You always give these permissions to your connections, regardless of your channel type:

Grant viewing access to your profile
— Let them see how you described yourself.
Grant viewing access to your channel stream and posts
— Let them see what you post (unless they aren't in the post's "Who can see this?" list).
Grant viewing access to your file storage and photos
— Let them see your files (unless they aren't in the file's "Who can see this?" list).
Accept delivery of comments on your posts from
— Let them comment on your posts.

You always give this permission to your connections, UNLESS your channel type is "Social - Restricted". (You can only change this permission by changing your channel type.):

Grant viewing access to your address book (connections)
— Let them see who you are connected to.

Permissions that you CAN change here

These permissions are enabled by default, regardless of your channel type, but you can turn them off:

Will send them your posts and conversations
— Should your instance send them your stuff? You can turn this off if you only want to "follow" a connection, and you don't care whether they see your posts.
Grant permission to post on your channel (wall) page
— Let them create a post by entering it on your home page.
Accept delivery of direct messages and personal mail from
— Let them send messages addressed only to you.

Other permissions you can change:

Accept delivery of posts and conversations from
— If your channel is "Social - Normal" or "Social - Restricted", you will usually want this enabled so that you will see your connection's posts and comments. If your channel is a Group, this should be turned off, because your Group only needs to see direct messages from its members, and not everything they post.
Accept comments and wall posts only after approval (moderation)
— This is used by "Group - Moderated" channels, so that all incoming posts and comments will be held for you to approve or reject. Once you trust a Group member, you may want to turn this off and let them post without moderation. (If you have a different channel type, you can enable this if you need to control posts/comments from a problematic person.)
Grant search access to your channel stream and posts
— Let them search your posts. (By default, this is disabled if your channel type is "Social - Restricted" or "Group - Restricted".)
Grant upload permissions to your file storage and photos
— Let them upload files to your channel's storage. (By default, this is enabled only if your channel type is "Group - Normal" or "Group - Restricted".)

Permissions that you CAN change, but probably SHOULD NOT:

Grant permission to republish/mirror your posts
— Let them import your stuff and republish it under their own name. For example, if you operate channels on several instances, you can aggregate them into one. This is a complex function and will (eventually) be described in detail in a different Help document.
Grant channel administration (delegation) permission
— Let them operate your channel as if they were you. It will appear in their channel list as a "delegated" channel, and they can do anything you could do.
